Project # 0042
Often an instrument has tuning instability due to friction at either of the contact points of the strings. Since there isn't anything to help the string slide across the nut or the bridge when it is moved, it has trouble returning to the spot it should rest to keep it in tune. This is why we have partnered with Musgrave Pencil Company to create the Luthier Pencil.
Graphite is a wonderful lubricant to use inside the nut slots of your instrument to allow the strings to move freely across the nut and then return properly to pitch. Simply work a little bit from the end of the pencil into each slot during a restring to ensure proper use! Our friends at Musgrave Pencil Company have been doing this since 1916, so you can trust that our cedar Luthier pencil has been crafted with the highest level of quality and care.
Directions: Sharpen pencil ends with utility knife or specialized carpenter pencil sharpener. Ensure the pencil has a wide and flat tip. Run the tip along the edges of the guitar slot to release graphite. Use the string to move any shavings on the nut into the bottom of the slot. Tune to pitch.
